Full Tilt Poker's license gets revoked

Full Tilt Poker, which the U.S.?has accused of running an online Ponzi scheme, had its gambling licenses revoked Thursday by a British gambling watchdog.

The Alderney Gambling Control Commission said in a statement that it had revoked the licenses of??Vantage Limited, Filco Limited and Oxalic Limited, trading as Full Tilt Poker, because it "emerged that FTP had fundamentally misled AGCC about their operational integrity by continuously reporting as liquid funds balances that had been covertly seized or restrained by US authorities, or that were otherwise not actually available to the operator."

Full Tilt was not immediately available to comment. The Channel Islands-based AGCC noted that its move does not prevent Full Tilt from reactivating its business under new ownership.

"Unresolved claims by players against FTP become a matter for the police and civil authorities. Now that FTP?s licences have been revoked, AGCC no longer has jurisdiction over these companies," AGCC said.

The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that FTP has been in talks with potential investors for months.

Last week, Justice Department accused poker superstars Christopher ?Jesus? Ferguson, Howard ?The Professor? Lederer and other executives of using?a poker website to?operate a Ponzi scheme that?defrauded players out of $300 million.

"Full Tilt was not a legitimate poker company, but a global Ponzi scheme," said Preet Bharara, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, in a statement on Sept. 20.?A Ponzi scheme, named after famed swindler Charles Ponzi, is a pyramid scam in which supposed profits are paid out to early investors through funds from later investors.

In the statement, Bharara said Full Tilt "cheated and abused its own players to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars." It went on to say that "insiders lined their own pockets with funds picked from the pockets of their most loyal customers while blithely lying to both players and the public alike about the safety and security of the money deposited with the company."

UPDATE: Hours after Alderney's decision, Full Tilt Poker released a statement to?PokerStrategy.com. In it, Full Tilt concludes: ?Notwithstanding the potential damage done by the Commission and its disregard for our players, Full Tilt Poker remains committed to repaying its players in full and continues in active negotiations."

Lots of Coffee Might Lower Depression Risk: Study (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Sept. 26 (HealthDay News) -- Coffee lovers, take heart: Women who drink four or more cups of caffeinated coffee daily seem to have a lower risk of depression than those who don't drink java or stop at one cup a day, a new study suggests.

Although it's way too early to start recommending regular coffee consumption as a way to prevent depression, the findings may comfort those who feel guilty about their habit.

"This may lessen concerns that caffeine consumption will have a negative impact," said Dr. Christopher Cargile, an associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral science at Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine. "Caffeine at high doses has long been associated with worsening of anxiety and other psychiatric illness, and at times this has lead to lingering concerns that it might be best to limit its use."

Cargile was not involved with the study, which appears in the Sept. 26 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

The lion's share of caffeine in the world -- 80 percent -- is consumed in the form of coffee and caffeine is already the most widely used central nervous system stimulant in the world.

Researchers have probed caffeine's effect on heart health, markers of inflammation and cancer (generally the effects are benign or even positive), but there's been relatively little research into its effects on mood.

What little research has been done has generally found a salubrious effect, with more coffee decreasing depressive symptoms and even being associated with a lower risk of suicide.

"Caffeine has short-term positive effects on mood, subjective feelings of having more energy and being more awake in the short term," said study senior author Dr. Alberto Ascherio, who is a professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

It seemed natural "to see whether long-term coffee consumption associated with a lower risk of developing depression," he added.

These authors tracked almost 51,000 women, averaging age 63, who were participating in the Nurses' Health Study. None of the women reported being depressed at the beginning of the study and none were on antidepressants.

Depression was measured by new diagnoses accompanied by long-term use of antidepressants.

Women who drank four cups of coffee or more a day had a 20 percent reduced risk for depression and those imbibing two to three cups daily had a 15 percent decreased risk, compared to those drinking one cup or less daily.

Decaffeinated versions of the drink didn't seem to be linked at all with depression.

A relationship between caffeinated coffee and depression does make a certain amount of biological sense, experts say.

"Caffeine is known to affect the release of several neurotransmitters, including dopamine and serotonin, that had been implicated in regulating mood and depression," said Ascherio, who is also professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

But those are short-term effects and "we [still] don't really know why coffee [over] years can decrease depression," he said.

"If caffeine has some antidepressant effect, we may be able to find compounds with an even stronger antidepressant effect," Ascherio said.

First, though, researchers need to determine if there is a cause-and-effect relationship at work here.

"Currently there's just too much we don't know about the cause-and-effect relationship that may be producing these findings," said Cargile, who is also regional associate dean of Texas A&M's Bryan-College Station campus.

UBS CEO Gruebel resigns over rogue trading loss (AP)

GENEVA ? UBS chief executive Oswald Gruebel has resigned over a $2.3 billion loss caused by rogue trading at its investment division, which is to be restructured now to prevent similar incidents in future, the Swiss bank said Saturday.

Gruebel, who had come under heavy pressure from shareholders over the scandal, said he hoped his resignation would allow the bank to restore its reputation in the eyes of clients and investors.

"As CEO, I bear full responsibility for what occurs at UBS," he said in a memo to staff. "From my first day on the job I placed the reputation of the bank above all else. That is why I want to and must act according to my convictions."

UBS Europe chief Sergio P. Ermotti will take over immediately as interim chief executive until Gruebel's replacement is appointed.

Gruebel's departure caps 10 days of speculation over his future following the bank's announcement that a single London-based trader had evaded internal control systems and gambled away $2.3 billion.

The trader, 31-year-old Kweku Adoboli, was arrested Sept. 15 and charged with fraud and false accounting. A judge ordered him Thursday to be held in jail until a hearing next month.

The rogue trading loss is the third major scandal to hit Switzerland's biggest bank in recent years, and the second to come out of its investment unit. During the financial crisis, UBS was one of the European banks worst hit by failed investments in the subprime mortgage market. A year later, it became embroiled in an embarrassing U.S. tax evasion case.

UBS President Kaspar Villiger told reporters the board had tried to persuade Gruebel to stay until the bank's annual shareholder meeting next year, but the gravel-voiced German had wanted to send a strong signal about the trading loss immediately.

"He thinks that this act could maybe create a new basis for UBS to continue," said Villiger, who earlier noted that UBS wants to "turn this disaster into an opportunity."

Speculation has already begun over who is to succeed the 67-year-old Gruebel. Ermotti, a Swiss citizen who joined UBS from Italy's UniCredit, is considered a front-runner.

"Sergio is, of course, a strong candidate," said Villiger. He mentioned no other names.

Villiger said Gruebel, who was brought in more than two years ago to help revive the fortunes of the Zurich-based bank, had achieved "an impressive turnaround and strengthened UBS fundamentally."

Gruebel came out of retirement to lead UBS. A former trader, he steered the bank back to profit and resolved the U.S. tax evasion case, though not without blowing a hole in Switzerland's storied tradition of banking secrecy.

As head of UBS he also accepted new Swiss government rules that require the bank and its rival Credit Suisse to hold far greater capital reserves to prevent a possible collapse during a banking crisis.

"He steps down having helped make UBS one of the world's best capitalized banks," Villiger added.

Gruebel's resignation was inevitable, given the size of the loss and the bank's other recent risk-management failures, said Michael Robinson, a former U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission official who advises banks and companies on crisis communications.

"As soon as we found out that a single trader had lost what would surely have been their entire quarterly profit, (Gruebel) was just waiting to fall down and die," Robinson said, now a senior vice president at Levick Strategic Communications in Washington, D.C.

By responding quickly, Robinson said, UBS gave itself a chance to show it is serious about preventing similar problems in the future.

But the bank still must win over investors with substantive changes to its leadership and risk-management policies, he said. A similarly orderly transition wasn't likely at a scandal-plagued U.S. bank, given the scrutiny banks in the U.S. get from regulators, Congress and a recession-weary public.

"This is very orderly; it's the kind of thing you'd expect from a European institution as opposed to an American institution," Robinson said.

The UBS board, which met in Singapore this week, said it would seek to put in place measures to prevent a similar rogue trading loss from recurring.

The bank said it would hold on to its integrated strategy, but that the investment business would be simplified to ensure there was less risk, using less capital to produce more reliable returns. Asked whether investment bank chief Carsten Kengeter would keep his job, Villiger said: "I do not see any reasons to doubt (his) future."

Earlier this week, the Government of Singapore Investment Corp. ? the largest UBS shareholder ? said in a rare public rebuke that it was concerned about lapses at UBS and called on the bank to restore confidence.

The sovereign wealth fund, which owns about 6.4 percent of UBS, has suffered heavy losses on its investment as the bank's share price has more than halved since it became a shareholder.

In Washington, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, deputy prime minister of Singapore and minister of finance, refused to comment on UBS developments on Saturday, insisting on the separation between the government and the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation decisions. He said he was sure the GSIC officials were in touch with UBS officials and Swiss regulators. Tharman was in Washington, chairing the meeting of the International Monetary Fund's policy-setting committee.

SAN FRANCISCO ? Facebook is dramatically redesigning its users' profile pages to create what CEO Mark Zuckerberg says is a "new way to express who you are."

Zuckerberg introduced the Facebook "timeline" Thursday in San Francisco at the company's f8 conference for some 2,000 entrepreneurs, developers and journalists. The event is also being broadcast to more than 100,000 online viewers.

The timeline is reminiscent of an online scrapbook, with the most important photos and text that users have shared on Facebook over the years. It's Facebook's attempt at growing from an online hangout to a homestead, where people express their real selves and merge their online and offline lives. The timeline can go back to include years before Facebook even existed, so users can add photos and events from, say 1995 when they got married or 1970 when they were born.

Zuckerberg took the stage after a humorous skit, in which Saturday Night Live actor Andy Samberg impersonated him. The real Mark Zuckerberg looked considerably more playful and at ease than he has in past events, suggesting he is growing into his role as the public face of Facebook.

But he quickly got down to business as he introduced the timeline as "the story of your life ? all your stories, all your apps and a new way to express who you are."

Expanding on its ubiquitous "like" buttons, Zuckerberg said Facebook will now let users connect to things even if they don't want to "like" them.

"We are making it so you can connect to anything you want. Now you don't have to like a book, you can just read a book," he said. "You don't have to like a movie; you can just watch a movie."

Power corrupts, especially when it lacks status

Ever wonder why that government clerk was so rude and condescending? Or why the mid-level manager at your company always doles out the most demeaning tasks? Or, on a more profound level, why the guards at Abu Ghraib tortured and humiliated their prisoners?

In a new study, researchers at USC, Stanford and the Kellogg School of Management have found that individuals in roles that possess power but lack status have a tendency to engage in activities that demean others. According to the study, "The Destructive Nature of Power without Status," the combination of some authority and little perceived status can be a toxic combination.

The research, forthcoming in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, is "based on the notions that a) low-status is threatening and aversive and b) power frees people to act on their internal states and feelings." The study was conducted by Nathanael Fast, assistant professor of management and organization at the USC Marshall School of Business; Nir Halevy, acting assistant professor of organizational behavior at the Stanford Graduate School of Business; and Adam Galinsky, professor of management and organizations at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

To test their theses, the authors conducted an experiment with students who were told they would be interacting with a fellow student in a business exercise and were randomly assigned to either a high-status "Idea Producer" role or low-status "Worker" role. Then these individuals were asked to select activities from a list of 10 for the others to perform; some of the tasks were more demeaning than others.

The experiment demonstrated that "individuals in high-power/low-status roles chose more demeaning activities for their partners (e.g., bark like a dog three times) than did those in any other combination of power and status roles."

According to the study, possessing power in the absence of status may have contributed to the acts committed by U.S. soldiers in the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq in 2004. That incident was reminiscent of behaviors exhibited during the famous Stanford Prison Experiment with undergraduate students that went awry in the early 1970s. In both cases the guards had power, but they lacked respect and admiration in the eyes of others and in both cases prisoners were treated in extremely demeaning ways.

Fast said that he and his colleagues focused on the relationship between power and status because "although a lot of work has looked at these two aspects of hierarchy, it has typically looked at the isolated effects of either power or status, not both. We wanted to understand how those two aspects of hierarchy interact. We predicted that when people have a role that gives them power but lacks status?and the respect that comes with that status?then it can lead to demeaning behaviors. Put simply, it feels bad to be in a low status position and the power that goes with that role gives them a way to take action on those negative feelings."

Social hierarchy, the study says, does not on its own generate demeaning tendencies. In other words, the idea that power always corrupts may not be entirely true. Just because someone has power or, alternatively, is in a "low status" role does not mean they will mistreat others. Rather, "power and status interact to produce effects that cannot be fully explained by studying only one or the other basis of hierarchy."

One way to overcome this dynamic, according to the authors, is to find ways for all individuals, regardless of the status of their roles, to feel respected and valued. The authors write: "?respect assuages negative feelings about their low-status roles and leads them to treat others positively."

Opportunities for advancement may also help. "If an individual knows he or she may gain a higher status role in the future, or earn a bonus for treating others well, that may help ameliorate their negative feelings and behavior," Fast said.

The researchers conclude, however, that, "Our findings indicate that the experience of having power without status, whether as a member of the military or a college student participating in an experiment, may be a catalyst for producing demeaning behaviors that can destroy relationships and impede goodwill."

Health insurer says: Watson will see you now

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.?? IBM's supercomputer system, best known for trouncing the world's best "Jeopardy!" players on TV, is being tapped by one of the nation's largest health insurers to help diagnose medical problems and authorize treatments.

WellPoint Inc., which has 34.2 million members, will integrate Watson's lightning speed and deep health care database into its existing patient information, helping it choose among treatment options and medicines.

"This very much fits into the sweet spot of what we envisioned for the applications of Watson," said Manoj Saxena, general manager of an IBM division looking at how the computer can be marketed.

Lori Beer, an executive vice president at Indianapolis-based WellPoint, agreed.

"It's really a game-changer in health care," she said.

The WellPoint application will combine data from three sources: a patient's chart and electronic records that a doctor or hospital has, the insurance company's history of medicines and treatments, and Watson's huge library of textbooks and medical journals.

IBM says the computer can then sift through it all and answer a question in moments, providing several possible diagnoses or treatments, ranked in order of the computer's confidence, along with the basis for its answer.

"Imagine having the ability within three seconds to look through all of that information, to have it be up to date, scientifically presented to you, and based on that patients' medical needs at the moment you're caring for that patient," said WellPoint's chief medical officer, Dr. Sam Nussbaum.

Saxena said the WellPoint application would likely be accessed from an ordinary computer or handheld device.

Beer said patients needn't worry that Watson will be used to help insurers deny benefits. If a doctor veers from Watson's diagnosis or treatment recommendations, the insurer would have a clinician review the case like it currently does. It won't base a claim decision solely on Watson.

"Ultimately the goal here is not denying treatment but getting people to the right care," Beer said, adding that Watson was not designed to replace humans.

Beer said WellPoint is trying to offer care providers a tool that helps lead to better treatment outcomes, which is what the insurer wants to base reimbursement on in the future.

Nussbaum said a pilot program will be rolled out early next year at several cancer centers, academic medical centers and oncology practices.

WellPoint is the nation's largest publicly traded health insurer based on enrollment. It operates Blue Cross Blue Shield plans in 14 states, including New York and California.

Neither party would say how much Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM is being paid. Saxena said it's the first money Watson has earned for the company; the $1 million it won on "Jeopardy!" earlier this year was given to charity.

Watson's next jobs will probably also be in health care, but financial services and public safety applications are on the horizon, Saxena said.

Training classes for pets aren?t just for the dogs. Cats are starting to go to school too.

The Sonoma and Marin humane societies have both added cat education to their class offerings. Once a month, the Sonoma Humane Society is hosting a cat handling workshop. Gayle Goodbread, a feline behavior consultant, says the once a month workshops are designed to help teach cat owners how to get the best behavior from their pets. The Marin Humane Society is offering kitten socialization, cat handling and clicker training for cats classes.

?Cats benefit from socialization and crate training exercises as much as dogs,? says Laura Hazard, a cat behaviorist on staff at the Marin Humane Society in Novato. ?I think a lot of people just don?t realize the value of working with cats, especially kittens, to get them used to vet visits and even other cats.?

Kitten kindergarten started in Australia where behaviorists started taking advantage of the early socialization window of kittens much like is already being done with puppies. If kittens are exposed to a variety of situations like cat carriers, vet office visits and nail trimmings, they become more tolerant of them over their lifetime. The kitten socialization window is open generally through week 16.

Hazard says most people ?adopt a cat and bring it home and it never leaves the house. But with dogs it?s the opposite.?

The idea behind offering more classes to cat owners is partly ?cat activism? says Hazard. ?It?s about elevating cats in our view to more like family members, like we have with dogs. Cats are very social creatures, they are not the loners and aloof. They want to be a part of the family and sleep on the bed with you and the dog.?

In kitten socialization classes, kittens under 16 weeks are brought to class and played with by their owners. Then ?pass the kitten? is done to get the feline youngsters used to handling and a wider variety of people.

The classes at Sonoma Humane and Marin Humane will cover issues like litter box challenges, nail trimmings and cat behavior. Cat owners will also be shown how to trim cat nails, brush teeth, and deliver pills. Demonstration cats are used in the workshops. Participant?s cats stay home.

At the Marin Humane Society, cat owners will be shown how to use clicker training to teach their cats behaviors. Clicker training involves the use of small device that emits a small audible click. It?s used to mark behavior in an animal which can then be rewarded. If the cat begins to understand the behavior is rewarding, you can teach the cat a variety of behaviors or ?tricks.?

The goal is to prevent and manage unwanted behaviors. Many cat behavior problems can be traced to how well the cat can rely on their people says Hazard. ?If they cannot rely on the people in the home then many cats will seek safety in the environment. That?s why a strong bond with people can alleviate problems with moves, new people in the household like a baby or even the introduction of another cat.?

The Sonoma and Marin humane society classes will also touch on ways to play with your cat, one on one. Play is important because bored cats will eat and get fat. Obesity is not just a human affliction with veterinarians saying the lack of exercise and proper eating habits have become epidemic in the pet population.
