An extinct species of scops owl has been discovered in Madeira

An international team of scientists, including some from Majorca and the Canary Islands, have described a new type of fossil scops owl, the first extinct bird on the archipelago of Madeira (Portugal). Otus mauli, which was also the first nocturnal bird of prey described in the area, lived on land and became extinct as a result of humans arriving on the island.

Twenty years ago, the German researcher Harald Pieper discovered fossil remains of a small nocturnal bird of prey in Madeira, which, until now, had not been studied in depth. The international team of palaeontologists has shown that the remains belong to a previously unknown extinct species of scops owl, which they have called Otus mauli.

"It has long legs and wings slightly shorter than the continental European scops owl from which it derives" Josep Antoni Alcover, one of the authors of the study and researcher at the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA), a mixed centre of the university of the Balearic Islands and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

The result of the analysis of the proportions of the remains found, which has been published in the journal Zootaxa, reveals that Otus mauli could be a land inhabiting species that ate invertebrates and "occasionally lizards or birds".

"It is likely that their extinction is linked to the arrival of humans and the fauna they brought with them", Alcover explains. He also points out that their disappearance formed part of a pattern of extinction of the island's species, which occurred in virtually all the islands of the world.

According to researchers, amongst the causes of extinction of this scops owl, the destruction of its habitat is highlighted, as Madeira had a lot of serious fires during the seven years that followed the Portuguese arrival. Furthermore, humans brought new birds with diseases that were unfamiliar to the native species, as well as rats and mice that could prey on eggs of animals that had nests close to the ground.

Exclusive to Madeira?

The same or a similar species has been investigated in Porto Santo, another island of the archipelago of Madeira. "This is extremely interesting" the researcher says, "but difficult to assess because the materials found are limited and fragmented".

"If the scops owls of Madeira and Porto Santo were different species, it would mean that the Otus' flying ability is much more limited than continental scops owls. The distance between the two islands would be enough to isolate them" Alcover points out.

The homogeneity of the scops owls' measurements on the two islands, as well as the differences compared to European scops owls suggests that they were genetically isolated from the European populations. The distance between the continent and the island was enough to explain the difference in the species.

On this island they expect to discover new species of birds in the near future "which will report a world that disappeared just a few hundred years ago". "The same thing will happen in the Azores islands where there is already evidence that a scops owl different to the ones in Madeira and Europe that is also extinct" the scientist says.

A new installation called Ant Ballet, created by designer Ollie Palmer from University College London, in collaboration with biologist Seirian Sumner from the Institute of Zoology in London, uses an artificial pheromone to disrupt the movement of foraging ants.

In this video, you can watch Argentine ants getting fooled in Spain, where Palmer travelled to set up his artistic experiment. A nest in a tabletop becomes the ants' new home and a robotic arm in the middle periodically sprays out a powdered pheromone, which was developed in collaboration with a team of researchers from University College London. Since ants lay down chemical trails which they follow in search for food, the fake scent makes them deviate from their intended route.

Palmer has also created a foraging simulation based on trail-following behaviour (see end of video). Virtual ants move according to simple rules, governed by an algorithm and a tendency to steer towards pheromone patches. "About half of the ants lay trails, while the other half are passive," says Palmer. "This negates any complexity within the environment and behavioural changes due to the presence of food."

Although the simulation is highly simplified, Sumner is impressed by the collective organisation that emerges in the artwork. She also thinks that the demonstrations with live ants could be useful for research. "The intention is to control their dance, but from a scientific point of view it has exciting potential for conservation," she says. "An important component of applied research into invasive ant species is understanding how we can disrupt colony function."

The simulation is currently on display at the London Zoo in the first public exhibition of the work. The first demonstration with real ants will take place later this year at Pestival, an art festival celebrating insects, in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

Navy launches newest communication satellite

A new communications system for the US Navy saw its first component launch on an Atlas V rocket on Feb. 24.

Once fully implemented in 2014, the Multi User Objective System will increase bandwidth available to Navy users tenfold over current capabilities. The MUOS system uses a version of civilian cell network technology called Wide Code Division Multiple Access, or WCDMA to provide users with enhanced communications abilities across the globe.

MUOS also supports legacy technology, making sure that users with older equipment, which functioned over the UHF Follow-On (UFO) satellite constellation, will continue to operate with the new MUOS technology. This obviates the need to completely replace all older systems, and allows a slower and more natural turnover to new systems.

The MUOS satellites are built by Lockheed Martin Space Systems. They weigh 6,800 lbs and have a wingspan of 92 feet and a radio dish 46 feet in diameter.

MUOS-1 was the first of five satellites to be launched; four will be fully operational and one will be an on-orbit spare.

The Atlas V that carried MUOS-1 flew in the 551 configuration, with five solid rocket boosters, a five-meter fairing, and a single engine Centaur upper stage. This is only the third time this configuration has flow, the other two times flew for NASA.

This flight also marked the 200th flight for the venerable Centaur upper stage. The Centaur was the first rocket stage in history to use liquid hydrogen as fuel, and paved the way for the Apollo lunar landing by sending Surveyor landing probes to the Moon.

The first Centaur was launched in 1962, but failed due to the explosion of the Atlas booster. The first successful Centaur flight was not until Nov 1963.

The Centaur has not only graced the top of the Atlas rocket, but was also used on the Titan rockets, which are now retired.

FACT CHECK: More US drilling didn't drop gas price

WASHINGTON (AP) ? It's the political cure-all for high gas prices: Drill here, drill now. But more U.S. drilling has not changed how deeply the gas pump drills into your wallet, math and history show.

A statistical analysis of 36 years of monthly, inflation-adjusted gasoline prices and U.S. domestic oil production by The Associated Press shows no statistical correlation between how much oil comes out of U.S. wells and the price at the pump.

If more domestic oil drilling worked as politicians say, you'd now be paying about $2 a gallon for gasoline. Instead, you're paying the highest prices ever for March.

Political rhetoric about the blame over gas prices and the power to change them ? whether Republican claims now or Democrats' charges four years ago ? is not supported by cold, hard figures. And that's especially true about oil drilling in the U.S. More oil production in the United States does not mean consistently lower prices at the pump.

Sometimes prices increase as American drilling ramps up. That's what has happened in the past three years. Since February 2009, U.S. oil production has increased 15 percent when seasonally adjusted. Prices in those three years went from $2.07 per gallon to $3.58. It was a case of drilling more and paying much more.

U.S. oil production is back to the same level it was in March 2003, when gas cost $2.10 per gallon when adjusted for inflation. But that's not what prices are now.

That's because oil is a global commodity and U.S. production has only a tiny influence on supply. Factors far beyond the control of a nation or a president dictate the price of gasoline.

When you put the inflation-adjusted price of gas on the same chart as U.S. oil production since 1976, the numbers sometimes go in the same direction, sometimes in opposite directions. If drilling for more oil meant lower prices, the lines on the chart would consistently go in opposite directions. A basic statistical measure of correlation found no link between the two, and outside statistical experts confirmed those calculations.

"Drill, baby, drill has nothing to do with it," said Judith Dwarkin, chief energy economist at ITG investment research. Two other energy economists said the same thing and experts in the field have been making that observation for decades.

The statistics directly contradict the title of GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich's 2008 book "Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less," as well as the campaign-trail claims from the GOP presidential candidates.

Earlier this month, GOP front-runner Mitt Romney said of his solution to higher gas prices: "I can cut through the baloney ... and just tell him, 'Mr. President, open up drilling in the Gulf, open up drilling in ANWR (the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge). Open up drilling in continental shelf, drill in North Dakota, drill in Oklahoma and Texas.'"

On Wednesday, with President Barack Obama traveling to oil and gas production fields on federal lands, Crossroads GPS, a nonprofit arm of a super PAC supporting GOP candidates, released a new ad to air in the same states that Obama was visiting. It accused Obama of restricting oil development in America and concludes "bad energy policies mean energy prices we can't afford."

The late 1980s and 1990s show exactly how domestic drilling is not related to gas prices.

Seasonally adjusted U.S. oil production dropped steadily from February 1986 until three years ago. But starting in March 1986, inflation-adjusted gas prices fell below the $2-a-gallon mark and stayed there for most of the rest of the 1980s and 1990s. Production between 1986 and 1999 dropped by nearly one-third. If the drill-now theory were correct, prices should have soared. Instead they went down by nearly a dollar.

The AP analysis used Energy Department figures for regular unleaded gas prices adjusted for inflation to 2012 dollars, oil production and oil demand. The figures go back to January 1976, the earliest the Energy Department keeps figures on unleaded gas prices. Phil Hanser, an economist and statistician at the energy consulting firm The Brattle Group; University of South Carolina statistics professor John Grego; New York University statistics professor Edward Melnick and David Peterson, a retired Duke University statistics professor, looked at the analysis, ran their own calculations, including several complicated formulas, and came to the same conclusion.

When U.S. production goes up, the price of gas "is certainly not going down," Melnick said. "The data does not suggest that whatsoever."

The calculations "help make the point that U.S. production and demand have little to do with the price of gasoline in the U.S., and lend support to the notion that there is not a great deal we in the U.S., acting alone, can do to affect the price of gasoline," Peterson wrote in an email. He pointed out that Energy Department figures show that gas prices in the U.S. seem to rise and fall similarly to gas prices in Europe, showing that it has little to do with American drilling.

And that's the key. It's a world market, economists say.

Unlike natural gas or electricity, the United States alone does not have the power to change the supply-and-demand equation in the world oil market, said Christopher Knittel, a professor of energy economics at MIT. American oil production is about 11 percent of the world's output, so even if the U.S. were to increase its oil production by 50 percent ? that is more than drilling in the Arctic, increased public-lands and offshore drilling, and the Canadian pipeline would provide ? it would at most cut gas prices by 10 percent.

"There are not many markets where the United States can't impose its will on market outcomes," Knittel said. "This is one we can't, and it's hard for the average American to understand that and it's easy for politicians to feed off that."

If drilling activity rises around the globe for a sustained period of time, gasoline prices can fall as that new supply eventually finds its way to market, but the U.S. can't do it alone, oil analysts say.

Politicians ? especially those in the party that's not occupying the White House ? have long harped on high gas prices when expedient. Then-Sen. Barack Obama said in 2008, when he was running for president, that "here in Ohio, you're paying nearly $3.70 a gallon for gas, 2-1/2 times what it cost when George Bush took office."

But Obama, who has seen gas prices go up 73 percent since he took office, was singing a different tune last week in his weekly radio address: "The truth is: The price of gas depends on a lot of factors that are often beyond our control. Unrest in the Middle East can tighten global oil supply. Growing nations like China or India adding cars to the road increases demand. But one thing we should control is fraud and manipulation that can cause prices to spike even further."

The political party of the president doesn't seem to matter to the price at the pump either. Since 1976, the average monthly gas price, adjusted for inflation, during Democratic presidencies has been $2.25; under Republicans it's been $2.34. Obama had the steepest monthly average at $3.05 and Bill Clinton the cheapest at $1.68.

When Bush and running mate Dick Cheney campaigned in 2000, they argued that as oil executives they could get oil prices down, with Bush saying, "I would work with our friends in OPEC to convince them to open up the spigot, to increase the supply."

Yet it was during the last few months of Bush's term in 2008 that gas prices hit their highest: $4.27 when adjusted for inflation.

Levine in talks for 'American Horror Story' role

"Voice" coach Adam Levine may be joining season two of "American Horror Story."

FX's "American Horror Story" continues to boost the star power for its upcoming second season.

"The Voice" coach Adam Levine is in talks to join the horror anthology series from "Glee" co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

As first reported by EW, Levine would play half of a contemporary character referred to as "The Lovers" in "American Horror Story's" sophomore season.

For Levine, the role would mark "The Voice" coach's first entry into scripted series, with the FX drama working around the Maroon 5 frontman's summer concert schedule.

He would join cast members Jessica Lange, Zachary Quinto, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson and Lily Rabe in the new season -- with the previously announced stars returning to play entirely new characters that Murphy has described as the opposite of their initial role.

"It's very fun to take a group of actors that you love and say, 'Come play again,' " Murphy said this month at PaleyFest. "Every year in the series is about a different haunting, so everybody will be playing the opposite of what they played, which is fun."

Details on Season 2 of "AHS" remain slim, with Murphy announcing in December following the freshman-season finale that the series would reboot itself every year.

"There are so many great genre subsets of horror. Our only rule on the show is no werewolves and no vampires," Murphy said of what viewers won't see during Season 2. "I feel that a supernatural element will always be a part of the show, but I don't think we're interested in that the same way. We're trying to do something much more historically accurate."

The potential casting would bring Levine closer into the "Glee" fold, with the singer-songwriter launching a record label this year and signing "Glee" co-star Matthew Morrison.

Marine Protected Areas are keeping turtles safe

ScienceDaily (Mar. 19, 2012) ? Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are providing sea turtles with an ideal habitat for foraging and may be keeping them safe from the threats of fishing.

A study by an international team of scientists led by the University of Exeter, published March 15, shows that 35 per cent of the world's green turtles are found within MPAs.

This is much higher that would be expected as only a small proportion of shallow oceans are designated as MPAs.

MPAs are areas of ocean in which marine activities such as fishing are restricted. Regulated by governments and NGOs, in the tropics they are often rich in seagrass and algae, providing food for the turtles, whose foraging may also help to maintain these habitats. There are different categories of MPAs, with the most strictly-protected being managed mainly for science.

The research team used data on the movements of 145 green turtles from 28 nesting sites, captured through extensive satellite tracking work by a collaborative team from ten countries. Their data shows that green turtles can travel thousands of miles from their breeding sites to their feeding ding grounds. 35 per cent of these were found to be foraging in MPAs. 21 per cent were found in MPAs that are most strictly protected and older MPAs were more likely to contain turtles.

Professor Brendan Godley of the University of Exeter's Centre for Ecology and Conservation on the Cornwall Campus said: "Our global overview revealed that sea turtles appear in Marine Protected Areas far more than would be expected by chance. There has been debate over the value of MPAs, but this research provides compelling evidence that they may be effective in providing safe foraging habitats for large marine creatures, such as green turtles.

"The satellite tracking work that the University of Exeter has played such a lead role in developing allows us to assess the value of MPAs in a way that would never have previously been possible."

This study is published in the journal Global Ecology and Biogeography. It was facilitated by? Seaturtle.org and the group is funded by NERC and Defra's Darwin Initiative.

Fisheries Minister Richard Benyon welcomed the results of the research: "This study unlocks some of the secrets surrounding the life cycle of marine turtles, whose movements have long been a mystery. The results will mean we will better manage the oceans and protect turtle habitats which are key to helping them survive.

"This also shows the vital collaborative role Defra's Darwin Initiative plays in the cutting edge of conservation worldwide."
