It took a while for ?green? vehicles to break into the luxury market. They made their start in the eco-friendly segment as economy models first, slowly working their way to the top of the list. Green vehicles have finally made it, proudly filling a niche as a good choice for eco-friendly folks who hanker for luxury. Now BMW is introducing their new ActiveHybrid 5, which is expected to provide a challenge to other competitors in the emerging mid-size luxury hybrid niche.
The ActiveHybrid 5 uses a pairing of a 55-horsepower electric motor with a 3.0-liter turbo-charged six-cylinder engine, providing a total of 335 horsepower. This represents an increase of 35 horsepower over the 535i, upon which the ActiveHybrid was based. The hybrid vehicle boasts an eight-speed automatic and claims a 0 to 60 mph acceleration speed of 5.7 seconds.
The ActiveHybrid 5 has enough electric power capability to drive for 2.5 miles at 37 mph, unaided by the gas engine. The vehicle?s climate control system is also powered by the electric engine.
The ActiveHybrid 5 comes with innovative features like automatic start-stop, useful for in- town driving. This feature turns the engine off when the vehicle is standing still; when coasting, the engine shuts off at speeds up to 100 mph, and the electric motor takes over as needed. The coasting mode also disconnects the engine and the driveshaft so that engine braking doesn?t slow the vehicle.
The ActiveHybrid 5 comes equipped with an energy control display and an Eco Pro mode that acts on the vehicle?s transmission and throttle to provide a relaxed and efficient drive. The vehicle comes with standard navigation system and four-zone climate control.
The ActiveHybrid 5 hasn?t yet jumped through EPA hoops, so its fuel economy has not been tested. David Buchko, the company?s PR representatives, says that the automaker expects the ActiveHybrid to achieve ?double-digit improvement??a phrase that could cover a lot of ground.
The ActiveHybrid 5 will be available for purchase in March 2012. BMW expects their new hybrid to provide stiff competition for the Infiniti M35h and the soon-to-be-released Lexus GS450h.
