Business tips: how to recruit talent using social media ? The VECCI ...

By The Editor

Organisations and recruiters are increasingly using social media to attract talented staff. In America, nearly 90 per cent of companies plan to incorporate social media into their recruitment processes and a third of Australian businesses believe social media is an important hiring tool. How can your business recruit your next candidate using social media?

Use your Facebook page

Many businesses have Facebook pages to communicate with interested customers about their products and services, but they can also be used as a recruitment tool. People may ?like? your page because they?re interested in working for your business or in your industry. Post upcoming job vacancies and you may be surprised who you can reach.

Some larger companies have set up dedicated careers Facebook pages with details about jobs, career paths and industry news. They also answer queries from individuals ? see these examples from Telstra and PwC. Yours doesn?t have to be on the same scale, but these pages can be a guide to what social networking users want when it comes to jobs and career information.

Use LinkedIn

LinkedIn is now the most popular social media site to recruit from, because of its professional focus. There are many methods of using LinkedIn to recruit, including:

  • using your own network of friends, colleagues, former colleagues and other contacts to spread the word
  • looking for potential candidates by using keyword searches (e.g. finance analyst, Melbourne) or by employment history (you may wish to recruit someone who has worked at a rival company, for example)
  • developing a company profile, with a heavy emphasis on certain keywords (prospective employees also like to search for potential employers)
  • join groups that feature the interests and professional skills you?re seeking in a future employee.

LinkedIn also has a paid jobs advertising feature if the above free methods are unsuccessful.

Twitter may not be as effective for finding talent given the less specific search functionality of the site, but it can still be useful. Tweet job vacancies from your company?s account (and/or your personal one), bearing in mind the 140 character limit. Be concise about what type of person you?re looking for and use specific keywords that job seekers may search for.

Another good idea is to keep an eye out for Twitter ?hashtags? relating to local events in your industry. People who actively engage in online conversations about certain industries or careers are great to connect with, not just because they could be potential candidates, but they can also refer you to others they know.

Other social strategies

Aside from using these three social media websites, you may wish to promote your workplace through a blog post or engaging YouTube video, which you could link to through your social media channels. Online shoe retailer Zappos has created a series of quirky videos highlighting its fun workplace culture ? perhaps you could do something similar?

Have you ever used social media to recruit an employee? Are you planning to do so in the future?
