Record-breaking stellar explosion helps astronomers understand far-off galaxy

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Astronomers took advantage of the most distant supernova of its type to probe a galaxy some 9.5 billion light years away. The light from the exploding star, discovered by Pan-STARRS with followup spectroscopic observations by the Gemini North telescope and the Multiple Mirror Telescope, confirmed that the gas environment between the stars in the distant galaxy is "reassuringly normal.

An international research team, led by Edo Berger of Harvard University, made the most of a dying star's fury to probe a distant galaxy some 9.5 billion light-years distant. The dying star, which lit the galactic scene, is the most distant stellar explosion of its kind ever studied. According to Berger, "It's like someone turned on a flashlight in a dark room and suddenly allowed us to see, for a short time, what this far-off galaxy looks like, what it is composed of."

The study, published recently in The Astrophysical Journal, describes how the researchers used the exploding star's light (called an ultra-luminous core-collapse supernova) as a probe to study the gas conditions in the space between the host galaxy's stars. Berger says the findings reveal that the distant galaxy's interstellar conditions appear "reassuringly normal" when compared to those seen in the galaxies of our local universe. "This shows the enormous potential of using the most luminous supernovae to study the early universe," he says. "Ultimately it will help us understand how galaxies like our Milky Way came to be."

The discovery of the dying star in this distant galaxy was made using images from the Pan-STARRS1 survey telescope on Haleakala in Maui, Hawai'i. "These are the types of exciting and unexpected applications that appear when a new capability comes on line," said John Tonry, one of the study's co-authors and supernovae researcher at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa's Institute for Astronomy. Tonry adds, "Pan-STARRS is pioneering a new era in deep, wide-field, time-critical astronomy -- and this is just the beginning." After the Pan-STARRS discovery, spectroscopic follow-up studies using the Multiple Mirror Telescope in Arizona and the 8-meter Gemini North telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawai'i provided the data used by the team to probe the gas of the distant galaxy's interstellar environment.

The spectra revealed the signatures of a distant ultra-luminous supernova, and equally important, the unique fingerprints of iron and magnesium within the distant galaxy that hosted the explosion. The galaxy itself contains a very young population of stars (~15 to 45 million years old) with a mass totaling some 2 billon Suns.

Left: Portion of the Gemini spectrum of PS1-11bam from December 5 containing several interstellar absorption features of Fe II and Mg II at z = 1.566 (black). The error spectrum is shown in blue. For comparison we plot the GRB composite spectrum of Christensen et al. (2011). Right: A zoom-in on the relevant Fe II and Mg II lines demonstrates the similarity to GRB absorption spectra. Also shown is the [O II]3727 emission line at z = 1.567 from the January 1 Gemini spectrum.

The ultra-luminous supernova explosion belongs to a relatively recently-identified and special breed of exploding stars. They are some 10-100 times more luminous than their ordinary less-energetic cousins and unusually blue in color. While the process leading to their demise is still being explored, evidence points to the central core-collapse of a star having as much as 100 times the mass of our Sun. The collapse triggers an enormous explosion that blasts prodigious amounts of heavier elements through the star's enormous outer layers before expanding into space.

Traditionally, astronomers have used two techniques to study distant galaxies: They would either; 1) look directly for chemical elements leaving bright imprints on the galaxy's spectrum of light; or 2) search indirectly for dark signatures in the spectrum of an even more distant quasar, which reveals chemical elements in an intervening system that have absorbed light along our line of sight.

Recently, astronomers have supplanted these methods with another: seeking dark absorption imprints in the afterglows of "gamma-ray bursts" (GRBs); these brief flashes are the brightest and most energetic explosions in the universe, but they fade away within hours. The method is also limited by the need for expensive Earth-orbiting satellites to first detect and pinpoint a burst's location with precision before astronomers can make ground-based studies.

"The beauty of studying distant galaxies using ultra-luminous supernovae as a tool is that it eliminates the need for satellites and offers more time for study," says Alicia Soderberg of Harvard University. "A typical ultra-luminous supernova can take several weeks to fade away."

The study by Berger and his team provides the ?rst direct demonstration that ultra-luminous supernovae can serve as probes of distant galaxies. Their results suggest that with the future combination of large survey and spectroscopic telescopes ultra-luminous supernovae could be used to probe galaxies 90 percent of the way back to the Big Bang.

The Las Vegas Badger: Artificial Sweetners Not So Good For You

Think artificial sweeteners are good for you and help you lose weight, well maybe....
From the Orlando Sentinel: Equal, Sweet'N Low, Splenda, Truvia: All have been touted as the holy grail for those who want to indulge in sweets but dodge the calories and other repercussions of sugar.
But a growing body of science is finding that, although the artificial sweeteners in foods and beverages may lower calories, consumers pay for the trade-off in other ways.
Recent scientific studies are finding that consuming artificial sweeteners may actually pad on pounds and contribute to metabolic syndrome, an unhealthy combination of excess belly fat, high blood pressure and insulin resistance, which is epidemic in this country.
For starters, dieters often wrongly rationalize that if they have a diet soda, they can eat another slice of pizza or cake, so they wind up overcompensating, said Dr. Devendra Mehta, a gastroenterologist at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.
"As a diet aid, many studies have shown that artificial sweeteners don't help," Mehta said.
And they actually stimulate rather than curb sweet cravings.
"Overstimulation of sugar receptors from frequent use of these hyperintense sweeteners may limit tolerance for more-complex tastes," said Dr. David Ludwig, obesity expert and professor of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health. "Ultimately, consumers may find less intensely sweet foods, like fruit, less appealing and vegetables downright appalling."
But scientists think the problem goes beyond the tongue.
Sweet trap
Most Americans know that consuming too much sugar leads to health problems, specifically diabetes and obesity. That's because dietary sugar ? and that includes table sugar, raw sugar, corn syrup, honey, agave syrup and the like ? turns to glucose quickly in the blood. If that energy source isn't burned right away, it gets stored in the cells as fat.... "Mice studies have shown that non-nutritive sweeteners make mice more efficient at absorbing sugar from their diet." Although this hasn't been proved yet in humans, "we have the same setup for it," he said.
In human terms, that would mean if two identical people ate the same diet with the same number of calories, except one person drank diet soda and the other drank water, the diet-soda drinker would take up more glucose from the diet than the water drinker.
"This likely explains why diet-soda drinkers don't lose weight and often gain weight," he said.? http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2012-08-29/health/os-artificial-sweeteners-20120829_1_artificial-sweeteners-blood-sugar-metabolic-syndrome
Even though I am a fatter guy than when I was in high school, I rarely drink or use artificial sweeteners.? Mainly because they are too sweet and the ingredients of the fake sweeteners make me scared to put them in my body.

Diabetes can be controlled in patients after pancreas removal

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Removing the entire pancreas in patients with cancer or precancerous cysts in part of the organ does not result in unmanageable diabetes -- as many physicians previously believed, research at Mayo Clinic in Florida has found. The study, published online August 26 in the journal HPB Surgery, evaluates how well patients who had their entire pancreas removed could control their resulting diabetes. The pancreas produces insulin to remove sugar from the blood, so when the organ is gone, insulin must be replaced, usually through an external pump or with injections.

The researchers examined control of insulin over several years in 14 patients whose entire pancreas was removed. They compared their findings with 100 people with type 1 diabetes, and must use insulin replacement. They found both groups had little difficulty controlling their blood sugar, and no complications resulted.

The findings should reassure physicians and surgeons that removing the entire pancreas is reasonably safe and effective, says senior investigator Michael B. Wallace, M.D., chair of the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Mayo Clinic in Florida.

"What has confounded surgery for pancreatic cancers and precancerous cysts for a long time is the notion that if the entire organ is removed, patients will have great difficulty in controlling the resulting diabetes," Dr. Wallace says. "Most surgeons try to leave as much of the pancreas as possible."

"What we have shown here is that, due to wonderful recent improvements in insulin therapy, patients without a pancreas can control their blood sugar as effectively as type 1 diabetes patients can," he says.

Although this study was small, Dr. Wallace says the findings are mirrored in the experiences of patients treated at Mayo Clinic in Florida with total pancreas removal.

Even though the approach of preserving as much of the pancreas as possible benefits most patients, leaving part of the pancreas in some patients may put them at risk of developing hard-to-detect cancer in the remaining organ, he says.

Similarly, patients who have a potentially precancerous cystic condition known as intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm in part of the pancreas can develop the same cysts in the part of the pancreas that remains after partial removal, he says. Removing the entire pancreas eliminates the possibility of recurrence in the residual pancreas.

"Most surgeons today make difficult decisions about how much of the pancreas to remove in a patient, but that process may become a little more straightforward now that we have demonstrated patients do well when their entire pancreas is removed," Dr. Wallace says.

The study was funded by Mayo Clinic.

Culinary Walking Tours in Belgium: Bruges, Gent and Antwerp | The ...

Starting this Saturday, Therese, her mother Eileen and I will be visiting three of Belgium?s most popular destinations: Bruges, Gent and Antwerp.? In the course of planning, I considered a culinary walking tour in one or more of the cities.? Below is a summary of what I found out.

There are three websites that offer culinary walking tours, with some overlap between the three: Q-rius, Perfect Plus Event Productions and Vizit.? They seem to favor group tours (10 or more people) over individual ones, although there are a couple tours that accommodate individuals.? The tours may be grouped into three categories: ones that offer lunch or dinner, beer tours, and snack/delicacy tours.

Lunch/dinner:? In Bruges, you can do a 3 course lunch where you travel from course to course, either on foot, by bike or by horse tram.? The tours last from 3 to 4-1/2 hours, and cost from ? 40 to ? 80 per person, assuming a minimum of 10 participants.? If you have less than 10 people in your group, you have to pay extra.? There is also a 3-course dinner tour, but only on foot.

Gent also has both a lunch and dinner tour on foot.? For a twist, there is a dinner tour by boat.? They run from three to four hours in length and cost ? 45 to ? 75/person on foot, ? 65 to ? 80 by boat (minimum of 10 people in both cases).

Antwerp?s lunch and dinner tours are only on foot.? Lunch is 3-1/2 to four hours long and costs ? 40, and dinner is 3 or 4 hours and costs from ? 45 to ? 75/person (minimum of 10).

Again, in all cases, if you have a group smaller than 10 people, you will pay to make up the difference, from 15 to 20 Euros for each person less than 10.? So for us, if we were to book any of these meals, we would pay at least an additional 15 or 20 Euros for each of us, possibly much more, making the whole venture prohibitively expensive.? Therefore, none of these options work for us, unfortunately.

Beer.? Q-rius has a tour in Bruges called ?Typical Bars and Tough Tales? for just ? 15/person where you visit two pubs and get a drink at each, but again it is for groups (in this case, a minimum of 12).

In Gent, there are culinary beer walks with Vizit where the ? 45 to ? 60 cost per person covers a beer tasting at the start and a full beer at the end, but you have to pay for whatever other beer you drink.? It also includes a main course and a drink at lunch.? You can make the beer walk competitive if you have a large group, where the guide will break the group into smaller groups and quiz the various groups.? The competitive walk includes more food ? appetizers to start and dessert at the end ? rather than the beer tasting, and costs ? 55/person.

Antwerp doesn?t have beer walks per se, but Vizit does have competitive culinary walks there that may include a pub.? These are similar in price to the competitive walk in Gent.

Once again, since all these walks are for a group of a minimum of 10 people, they won?t work for us.

Snacks/delicacies.? Q-rius has a tour called ?Sweet Bruges? where for ? 12 to ? 18 per person you can spend 2 to 3 hours exploring the city?s chocolate shops.? There is also a more extensive walk that includes a visit to the chocolate museum and a chocolate-themed lunch as well as the chocolate shop visits for ? 60/person (minimum of 12 people for both).

Vizit has tours in both Gent and Antwerp that take you to 3 or 4 local shops where you taste delicacies like chocolate, cheese and meats.? You pay ? 80 to ? 120 for a guide and then ? 5 or ? 6/person for the delicacies.? These tours are offered every day of the week.

These snacks tours are also offered to individuals on Saturdays from 3:30 to 5:30 in both Gent and Antwerp, for just ? 12/person.? Since we are going to be in Antwerp on a Saturday, this is the one walking tour option that seemed like it might work for us.

As a result, I inquired further.? Specifically, I was wondering if, among the snacks offered, there would be anything for me to eat.? So I emailed Vizit and asked.? Here is their response:

?There are 4 stops in 4 shops:

1) A bakery, for rye bread with raisins. I?m afraid it contains butter, though not very much

2) A sweet shop, for a butter cookie and a praline. Both of them contain butter. Maybe we could ask for a praline made of nothing but dark chocolate, if that?s okay with you?

3) A butcher, for charcuterie (a kind of ham)

4) A caf? for a kind of beer or a kind of gin (?elixir d?Anvers?)?

So, it looks like if we booked this tour, all I might get out of it is a bit of ham and a beer.? Nevertheless, if it is something Therese and Eileen would enjoy, I would do it.? I considered further.

We are just going to be in Antwerp for 2 days, and I?ve never been there before. ?Therese was there a long time ago, and Eileen may have been there before ? but again, that would have been a long time ago.? So in effect, our time in Antwerp is something fresh for all of us.? Would it serve us to take at least 2 hours out of our limited time to visit a few specialty food shops, or would we rather spend it in churches and museums we?ve never seen?? My judgment, confirmed in consultation with Therese, was the latter.

So, there will be no culinary walking tour for us in Belgium.? Not that I have any regrets about that ? we are going to have a blast, I have no doubt.? And drinking good Belgian beer, eating frites and mussels, and maybe sampling some rich Belgian desserts ? in short, enjoying Belgium?s culinary excellence ? will contribute greatly to our enjoyment of our trip, I am sure.

Apple stock jumps on $1B Samsung verdict

(AP) ? Apple's $1 billion court win against Samsung is translating into a much bigger jump in its market value.

Apple shares are up $19, or 2.9 percent, at $682.22 in premarket trading Monday.

That boosts Apple Inc.'s market capitalization by $18 billion. If the stock stays at that level in regular trading, it will also be a new all-time high for the company.

Late Friday, a nine-person federal jury in Silicon Valley found that some of Samsung's products illegally copied features and designs from Apple's iPhone and iPad.

Investors appear to be betting that the verdict will make it harder for Apple rivals to ride on the iPhone's coat-tails.

Samsung Electronics shares fell 7.5 percent in Korean trading. Shares of HTC, which makes smartphones similar to Samsung's, fell 1.9 percent on the Taiwanese stock market.

'American Taliban': Let me pray with others in prison

Alexandria County Sheriff's Dept. / AP file

John Walker Lindh is seen in a file photo originally released by the Alexandria County Sheriff's Department in Alexandria, Va. The photo was made on Jan. 23, 2002.

By NBC News staff and wires

Updated at 3:30 p.m. ET: American-born Taliban fighter John Walker Lindh testified Monday that the U.S. government is forcing him to sin by denying him the right to pray daily with other Muslims in the highly restricted federal prison unit where he is detained.

He made his comments during the first day of a closely watched trial that will examine how far prison officials can go to ensure security in the age of terrorism.

Lindh was captured in Afghanistan and imprisoned in the United States after the September 11, 2001, terror attacks on the United States by Islamic extremists.

Lindh testified in federal court in Indianapolis that the Terre Haute, Ind., prison where he's serving a 20-year sentence for aiding Afghanistan's Taliban government before its overthrow allows prisoners to eat, talk, play cards and exercise together, but bans daily group prayer. He contends this violates a 1993 law barring the government from curtailing inmates' religious expression without showing it has a compelling interest.

Lindh, 31, adheres to a school of Islam that requires group prayer five times a day, if possible.?

"I believe it's obligatory," Lindh said. "If you're required to do it in congregation and you don't, then that's a sin."?

Attorneys for the government maintain that Lindh's own behavior since he was placed in the unit in 2007 proves the risks of allowing group prayer.

The government says in court documents that Lindh delivered a "radical, all-Arabic sermon" to other Muslim prisoners in February that was in keeping with techniques in a manual seized from al-Qaida members that details how terrorists should conduct themselves when they are imprisoned.

Lindh's sermon proves "that religious activities led by Muslim inmates are being used as a vehicle for radicalization and violence in the CMU," the government claims.

The prison warden halted daily group prayers in 2009 and allowed them only on the holy day of Friday.

Lindh accuses the government of going too far in its drive for security and trampling on his freedom of religion by restricting group prayers among Muslim inmates.

A cluster of U.S. marshals surrounded a shackled Lindh as he was brought into the courtroom on Monday morning. He?was wearing an olive green prison uniform and a white prayer cap. He smiled at his mother, who was sitting in the third row of the courtroom gallery.

The bearded Lindh was led out after two hours of testimony.

With the help of a glossary for court officials, Lindh guided the court through a series of lessons on Muslim prayer traditions.?

Lindh?has been held in the federal unit at?Terre Haute since 2007.??He was charged with supporting terrorists after his capture by U.S. troops in Afghanistan and later pleaded guilty to lesser charges.

Muslims are required to pray five times a day, and the Hanbali school to which Lindh belongs requires group prayer if it is possible. But inmates in the Communications Management Unit are allowed to pray together only once a week, except during Ramadan. At other times, they must pray in their individual?cells. Lindh claims that doesn't meet the Quran's requirements and is inappropriate because he is forced to kneel in close proximity to his toilet.

Thomas Farr, a former diplomat who now teaches at Georgetown University and studies religion and terrorism, said common sense suggests that the prison's need for security would outweigh Lindh's religious rights.

"The foremost responsibility of prison officials, as de facto proxies for the American people, is to prevent Mr. Lindh from obtaining any capacity to plan or carry out attacks on them," he wrote in an email. "That is why he is in prison, and if that is not a compelling state interest, I do not know what is."

The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana, which is representing Lindh, contends the policy violates a federal law barring the government from restricting religious activities without showing a compelling need.

"This is an open unit where prisoners are basically out all day," said ACLU legal director Ken Falk, who noted that inmates are allowed to play basketball and board games, watch television and converse as long as they speak English so the guards can understand. "They can do basically any peaceful activity except praying," he said. "It makes no sense to say this is one activity we're going to prohibit in the name of security."

Falk said Lindh's speech wasn't radical and was given during the weekly prayer that inmates are permitted. He said Lindh was not disciplined for the speech.

The self-contained unit in which Lindh resides has 43 inmates, 24 of whom are Muslim. Inmates are under open and covert audio and video surveillance, and except for talks with their attorney, all of their phone calls are monitored. Prisoners are not allowed to touch their family members when they come for their tightly limited visits. They must speak English at all times except when reciting ritual prayers in Arabic.

Without such tight security, the government claims, the prisoners would be able to conspire with outsiders to commit terrorist or criminal acts.

Joe Hogsett, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, said he believes decisions about prison regulations are best made by prison officials, "not by convicted terrorists and other dangerous criminals who reside there."

"Mr. Lindh is allowed to pray in his cell; he's allowed to pray wherever he happens to be as many times every day as his religion suggests to him that he should," Hogsett said. "Where the rules must draw the line is, how often must prison officials allow prisoners to congregate together?"

According to court documents, daily prayers were allowed from the time the unit opened in 2006 until May 2007, when Muslim inmates refused to stop in the middle of a prayer to return to their cells during a fire emergency.

The lawsuit was originally filed in 2009 by two Muslim inmates in the unit. Lindh joined the lawsuit in 2010, and the case has drawn far more attention since then. The other plaintiffs have dropped out as they were released from prison or transferred to other units.

Lindh had been charged with conspiring to kill Americans and support terrorists, but those charges were dropped in a plea agreement. He is serving a 20-year sentence for supplying services to the now-defunct Taliban government of Afghanistan and carrying explosives for them. He is eligible for release in 2019.?

Home Business Help You Should Not Miss | Jim McGilvary's Home ...

Mistakes Are Costing You! Learn To Stop?Making ALL 189 Of Them!

Struggling With WordPress? 100+ Step-By-Step Videos Now Available!

Starting your own home business is both nerve-wracking and exciting. Where do you begin? It also takes some planning to understand how to make your business successful. Having a home business will spawn many questions. There is some very helpful information presented in this article that will help you make the right decisions in your home business.

You will want to be easy with your customers to build a rapport with them, but this can hurt your profits. Let your customers know up front, and in writing, when payment is expected, along with any fees for late payments.

Open up a separate checking account for your home business. This way, you can keep your business expenses separated from your personal expenses. If your business assets are separated from your personal assets, filing your business taxes will be a breeze. There?s a better chance your taxes will be properly done if they?re easier to complete.

TIP! Consult with a lawyer that deals in business before you launch your home business. Some states have applicable business laws which you will need to be made aware of.

Business Trip

Take a business trip. Unlike straight-up vacations, a portion of the expenses from a business trip may be tax-deductible. If you want your vacation to masquerade as a business trip, check for business seminars in the area and attend them. This will allow a guilt-free deduction without a future visit from the Internal Revenue Service.

Keep records that document all expenditures you make for your home business on a day-by-day basis. If you do so, it will make tax deductions much simpler when it?s time to file your taxes. Having everything in order will also make things easier if you face an audit.

TIP! Make your home business fit into your family schedule. Anything that might drastically disrupt family life in the house should be reconsidered.

Select a moniker that has a meaning. The name you make for yourself is going to give off the image you portray, so pick a name that your potential customers can relate to. You might have an interesting or quirky story that is the reason behind your business name or brand. Customers will come back to buy more from you and develop loyalty.

Because your home-based business really only requires a simple web presence, save the money you?d spend on building a fancy site and use it for beta testing. Taking the time to ensure that your site works in a variety of settings is important. With this information, you can be confident that each of your prospective customers will be able to access your online, published details and navigate your ordering process.

Make sure your home business meets safety standards, especially if you have children. You might have to pay for the security equipment, especially if you have children. This will help keep your family safe and help you avoid having an expensive accident involving your business. Working from home does not protect you from inspections.

TIP! Before you try selling, you need to understand the price range in the market for the items you want to sell. Set your prices based off competitor evaluations so you can be competitive in your offering.

Always deposit as soon as you get the money. Don?t wait around until the end of the week or month to deposit checks. You are less likely to lose money if you don?t let the check sit too long. Make sure that when you do make a deposit, you do so with a live teller rather than an ATM machine. This way you will know that they money is going to the right place without any problems.

People should be able to contact you by telephone, mail or email. Develop a list of the people who contact you about your products and follow up with them with any additional information you can give them. You can influence your customer?s decision making process, and you should note what tactics work and what tactics did not work.

Tax Deductible

TIP! Let your loved ones know whenever you are working so that they will not interrupt you. You need to communicate to unexpected visitors that you are busy working and can?t chat at the moment.

Make sure you save your business receipts when running a home based business. There are many legitimate business expenses that are tax deductible. For instance, there are a variety of IRS rules that govern what qualifies as business travel, and what expenses associated with that travel are tax deductible or partially tax deductible. Therefore, it is important that you save all of your receipts. You may end up paying more taxes than you owe.

Try creating a busy people meal service, a chauffeur service, a daycare, or a grocery service. Many opportunities exist in your local community, so start brainstorming.

Utilizing the services of a qualified accountant will ensure that you make the proper choices regarding your tax information. Trying to learn the complicated world of business taxes only takes time away from the responsibilities of your new business.

TIP! You should describe your business in a couple sentences, also known as a business objective. Be sure to state what your business is and what you hope to accomplish with it.

As was mentioned earlier in this article, a home business can be both appealing and intimidating. Hopefully you have gleaned some good information and advice from the tips shared in this article. Put that advice into action, and watch as things begin to work more smoothly for your home business

Which Birth control Works Best? (Hint:It' s Not the Pill). | Health and ...

Which Birth control Works Best? (Hint:It? s Not the Pill). Jonathan Nourok

Long-lasting contraceptives such as the intrauterine device (IUD) and implants are better at preventing pregnancy than more popular birth control methods, including the pill, patch and vaginal rings, a new study concludes.

The study involved 7, 486 women participating in the Contraceptive Choice Project, run by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St.Louis.The women, aged 14 to 45, were given their choice of contraception for free and then tracked for up to three years for unintended pregnancy. The results, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that longer-lasting contraceptives were up to 20 times more effective ?? that is, women using IUDs, implants or hormone injections were up to 20 times less likely to get pregnant ?? after three years than the shorter-acting methods of birth control.

(MORE: Plan B:1 in 5 Pharmacists May Deny Eligible Teens Access to Emergency Contraception)

Among the 1, 500 women who chose to use birth control pills, patches or vaginal rings, 4.8% became pregnant after one year, compared with only 0.3% of the nearly 5, 800 women who chose IUDs or implantable contraceptives. After three years, 9.4% of women using short-acting contraceptives got pregnant, compared with 0.9% of those using longer-acting methods.

Women using hormone injections (a minority at 176) had even better success, with 0.1% becoming pregnant after one year and 0.7% becoming pregnant after three years.

The results, while striking, aren?t all that surprising, considering that shorter term options depend on consistent compliance to work most effectively:pills must be take daily and patches and rings must be replaced within days or weeks.

In contrast, IUDs, which are fitted into the uterus, last five or 10 years, depending on the device.Hormonal implants, which are surgically placed under the skin of the upper arm, are effective for three years. And injections last three months.

(MORE: The Pill at 50:Sex, Freedom and Paradox)

How well a birth-control method worked depended also on the age of the user:younger women, under 21, using pills, patches or vaginal rings were nearly twice as likely to become pregnant as older women who used the same contraceptives. Why? Because they were more likely to forget to take their pills or to change their patch or ring. There were no age-related differences in pregnancy rates among women using IUDs, implants or injections.

Overall, poorer women with less education were also more likely to experience contraceptive failures.

The researchers hope their results will prompt more women to consider using long-acting contraceptives to prevent unwanted pregnancy. Each year in the U.S., there are an estimated 3 million unplanned pregnancies, about 1.2 million of which lead to abortion, according to the study.About half of unintended pregnancies occur because of because of incorrect or inconsistent use of contraception, including condoms and birth-control pills.

Still, the pill is the most commonly used contraceptive in the U.S.That may be because women don? t hear about long-acting methods as often as other contraceptives, or because women are more comfortable taking a pill or using a patch than having a device implanted in their body.Another factor:cost.IUDs and implants are expensive and aren? t typically covered by insurance.

(MORE: Teen Sex Ed:Instead of Promoting Promiscuity, It Delays First Sex)

? Nationally, only about 5 percent are using long-lasting methods like IUDs and implants. We know one of the barriers to why they? re not using them more frequently is up-front costs, ? the study?s lead author, Dr.Brooke Winner of Washington University School of Medicine, told Reuters.?If [more] women were using these products nationally, there would be a very significant drop in unintended pregnancies, which would have far-reaching effects.?

While longer-lasting contraceptives can be more expensive up front, they may turn out to cost about the same as the pill when the expense is broken down by day, the researchers noted.IUDs and implants can be removed when women wish to become pregnant, and fertility typically returns immediately.

The researchers hope their study will also encourage doctors to consider IUDs and implants when discussing birth control with their patients.? If there were a drug for cancer, heart disease or diabetes that was 20 times more effective we would recommend it first, ? another study author, Dr.Jeffrey Peipert, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Washington University, told the Wall Street Journal.

Business Consulting - 10 Qualities of a Successful Consultant ...

What Sets Successful Consultants Apart? Are you part of a Management Team that is considering engaging a Business Consultant? Are you a Consultant who is considering a Consulting Job? This Article Covers 10 Qualities of a Successful Consultant.

1. Know the Client. It is not enough to know about the client's business or industry, or to offer up boilerplate solutions. Consultants must understand the history, mission and goals as relates to their tasking and, any relevant information about competitors and stakeholders. In essence, they are being paid to be an extension of the organization's team by helping to carry out key objectives through successful execution. In order to do that, it is critical that consultants understand the client's business.

2. They Listen. Consultants need to be expert listeners in order to accurately assess, advise and apply their expertise and acquired discovery for the benefit of the client. It's important to note that there is a substantial difference between hearing and listening. Listening gives us the ability to formulate the right questions and deduce accurate information from which to base our solutions.

3. Proper Connections. The sooner a consultant connects with the right people in the organization, the better. Too often, consultants misread the inner workings of an organization or miss important elements that may be key to their decision-making by catering exclusively to the top level. Successful consultants will pro-actively engage and connect with all of the key people who in any way, relate to their objectives.

4. Customization. When it comes to processes, people, communications, strategies and solutions--one size does not fit all. Great consultants put their experience and intuition into practice while analyzing, discovering and rendering solutions, and looking to best practices as a companion guide, but not as an exacting science.

5. Discernment. Critically, they must see the whole picture--that includes processes and people. Once they have identified all relevant components and dynamics, they will be able to start outlining how things fit together and begin to work toward formulating successful solutions. They also have a knack for not only seeing what is there, but what's not there--discernment can be pivotal.

6. They Deliver. Perfectly crafted proposals, shining referrals and resumes do not guarantee success. When a business pays for expert analysis, skill and advice from outside of their internal pool of expertise, consultants need to deliver-and deliver to the client's satisfaction.

7. Best Alignment. Not all consultants are cross--functional. Oftentimes, at the point a consultant is hired, the organization is desperate for help in building, making an important correction or securing a very specific skill set. They cannot afford to lose time or money. A consultant can hold multiple degrees or have decades of experience under their belt and still not be a good fit. Both the organization and the consultant need to be sure that they are the best alignment for one another.

8. Communication Excellence. Apart from possessing excellent verbal skills, the consultant should also have excellent listening skills and the ability to articulate. They need to be able to articulate pain points, goals and solutions. They should also keep all stakeholders informed, be prompt and clear with reports, and issue relevant feedback throughout the process.

9. On Their Game. Detail-oriented preparation, process and delivery are all important. They are also prompt, professional, organized, responsive and reliable. Staying on top of the latest trends and intelligence and being able to apply anything of relevance will also set them apart.

10. Create Value. Successful consultants create value by demonstrating business acumen and have the ability to lead and manage both processes and people. They are pro-active in understanding what the client needs, act as trusted advisors who bring the best solutions to the table in an effective and profitable manner, and they produce on their deliverables.

Republicans Delay Convention Start to Tuesday Due to Weather Concerns

Republican officials are delaying the start of their convention until at least Tuesday as Tropical Storm Isaac bears down on the Tampa Bay region, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Saturday in a memo.

Priebus said GOP officials will determine how to re-arrange the remaining three days of the Republican National Convention schedule as early as Sunday. Officially, the convention will convene on Monday, and then immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon.

?Our first priority is ensuring the safety of delegates, alternates, guests, members of the media attending the Republican National Convention, and citizens of the Tampa Bay area,? Priebus said. ?RNC Convention officials and the Romney campaign are working closely with state, local and federal officials, as well as the Secret Service, to monitor Tropical Storm Isaac and preserve Florida's emergency management resources. Officials have predicted participants may encounter severe transportation difficulties due to sustained wind and rain.?

Saturday?s announcement caps nearly a week of speculation that Isaac, which is expected to grow into a hurricane by the time it hits the area, could delay or even force the outright cancellation of the convention or parts of it. Concern had abated in the past day or two, but Republican officials still determined holding the gathering Monday could endanger the participants.

?Our chief priority is the safety of the residents of Florida, of those visiting the Convention, and all those in Gulf Coast states who may be impacted by Tropical Storm Isaac,? said Bill Harris, the CEO of the RNC.

Vice President Joe Biden's plans also were affected by the weather. A day after canceling his Democratic counter-messaging visit to Tampa on Monday, the Obama-Biden campaign said the vice president would also postpone events planned for Tuesday in Orlando and St. Augustine. The change was made "to ensure that all law enforcement and emergency management resources across the state can continue their focus on ensuring the safety of those who might be impacted by the storm," the campaign said.

Democrats are holding a three-day convention in Charlotte Sept. 4-6. Republicans had planned on a four-day convention starting Monday and culminating Thursday with Mitt Romney accepting the GOP presidential nomination.

Even before Isaac, Monday was giving the party trouble. Television networks said they would not run coverage on Monday night, though Ann Romney was scheduled to speak that night. On Friday. Romney said his wife's speech had been moved to Tuesday night.

This is not the first time Monday activities at a Republican convention have been affected by severe weather. Four years ago, Hurricane Gustav prompted Republican officials to cancel most of the first day's program in St. Paul.

Hairless Pets: Adorbz or Hideous? | Babble Pets

bambino 247x300 Hairless Dogs and Cats: Adorably Elf Like or Hideously Rat Like? (Photos)

Dobby can haz sock nao?

Hairless cats and dogs seem ideal: no shedding, no fleas, low maintenance, no allergies, right? Not exactly.

It turns out that some hairless pets, like the Sphynx cat, are actually higher-maintenance than their furry counterparts.

?Because of their lack of absorbent coat,? says The International Cat Association (TICA), ?Sphynx tend to get oily and need to be bathed often.? (Not sure how to bathe a cat? Check out our expert tips.)

Likewise, the Peterbald cat, and in particular the ?Ultra Bald? Peterbald, needs regular bathing, and in some cases daily cleaning to prevent dirt and oil from building up and clogging ?pores. TICA also notes that hairless cats? skin will sunburn, just like human skin.

Some breeds of hairless dogs are also more prone to skin problems.

?The Chinese Crested is prone to more frequent skin irritations, allergies and sunburn than a coated dog would experience,? says the American Kennel Club, ?and its owner should always take precautions to prevent this.?

Hairless pets aren?t necessarily hypo-allergenic, either, says allergy-free, either, says says?Dr. Patrick Hensel, DVM, DACVD, associate professor of veterinary dermatology at the?University of Georgia.

?There?s a question whether it?s the actual hair people are allergic to or the skin scales that are shed,? Dr. Hensel told?Vet Street.??We?re not 100 percent sure.?

Beyond the care requirements and allergy issues, there?s also the issue of whether you truly want a hairless pet. Snuggling and petting will obviously feel different. The Ultra Bald Peterbald, by the way, prefers massage to stroking, probably because its skin is actually sticky.

And then there?s the real question: are these animals adorably elf-like, or hideously rat-like? I seem to be wavering between the two.

Check out these photos, and you be the judge.

    Sticky cat

Peterbald cats were originally bred by mating Donskoy cats with Oriental cats, resulting in the more almond-shaped eyes. Most Peterbalds have a very fine, short, velour-like fur, but the Ultra Bald, like the cat shown here, "is born completely hairless, with soft skin that's sticky to the touch" says Vetstreet.

    Sculptural dogs

The Peruvian Inca Orchid comes in both hairless and stiff-coated, and comes in three sizes. The hairless ones, also called "Peruvian Hairless Dogs," look like sculptures.

    Xolo

The Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced show-low-eats-queen-tlee), or "Xolo," is an ancient, natural breed from Mexico. Like the Peruvian Hairless, it comes in three sizes ? toy, miniature and standard, and two varieties ? hairless and coated.

    An Even Ancient-er Breed

The Xolo is one of the world?s oldest and rarest breeds, says the AKC, calling the breed "the first dog of the Americas. Archaeologists have found evidence that Xolos accompanied man on his first migrations across the Bering Straits.

    Warm-climate dogs

Both the Peruvian Hairless and the Mexican Hairless (like the Xolo puppy here) are from warmer environments, and will need protection from cold. Neither is suitable as an "outdoor dog."

PFT: Braylon's athletic grab puts pressure on TO

Peyton ManningAP

Those diabolical reporters can?t leave well enough alone.

With the 49ers preparing to host the Broncos on Sunday in a preseason game, the media has revisited for the second time this week the incredible (as in not credible) explanation from the 49ers that they never ?pursued? quarterback Peyton Manning and that they only ?evaluated? him, like they would evaluate any other free agent.

Earlier, offensive coordinator Greg Roman bristled at the notion that the Niners are full of something other than chocolate fudge on the topic, insisting it was only an evaluation.

Manning opted not to discuss the matter, but what he said suggested that it was more than a look-see.

?I can?t speak for them,? Manning said, via Cam Inman of BayAreaNewsGroup.com.? ?It?s pretty well documented how all that went down in the offseason.? Not really going down memory lane.?

?Pretty well documented? could be a passive-aggressive way of saying that the Niners did a lot more than ?evaluate? him.? (Which they did.)

Coach Jim Harbaugh was even more prickly on his, yes, evaluation of Manning?s return from multiple neck surgeries.

?Does it matter what I think in that regard?? Harbaugh said.? ?I don?t think so.? I don?t see the relevancy of what my opinion is on that.? I don?t think it?s relevant at all to our situation here.?

We understand why Harbaugh wouldn?t want to talk about Manning.? The 49ers tried to get him.? They failed.? And they?d prefer that the rest of us not remind them of it.
