Two Moapa Valley teens attended the Little Britches Rodeo in Pueblo, Colorado last month. Jordan Taylor, 14, and Moapa Valley High School sophomore, Aspyn Civil competed in the Rodeo.
Taylor was proud to bring home two championship saddles, scholarship money, several prize belt buckles, and other awards. Civil also brought home a belt buckle for her achievements.
Taylor has participated in two separate rodeo association activities throughout the past year: the Little Britches Rodeo Association and the Junior High School Rodeo Association.
Taylor was most successful in the Little Britches Rodeo Association. He competed in the National Finals Little Britches Rodeo July 23-28. Kids in his class aged 8-14 came from all over the United States to compete in the rodeo.
Taylor competed against 1,000 other contestants with approximately 100-150 in each event. He participated in Goat Tying, Breakaway Roping, Flag Racing, and Ribbon Roping. Although the competition was stiff, Taylor won the Junior Boys Goat Tying World Championship.
At the Silver State Junior High School Rodeo held in Fallon Nevada at the end of June, Taylor also won All-Around Boys Champion along with prizes in Team Roping and other events.
Moapa resident, Asypn Civil went to the National Finals Little Britches Rodeo in Colorado as well and participated in Goat Tying and Barrel Racing. She placed 20th in Goat Tying and 21st in Barrel Racing which put her as 20th overall. Nearly 400 girls competed against her in these events.
Civil spent the month of July attending many different rodeos. But she especially likes to attend the Little Britches.
?I?ve been going there since I was 8 years old,? she said. ?I have a lot of friends that go to Nationals so it?s nice to catch up with them.?
Taylor spends a good deal of time traveling to rodeos with his dad, Ron Taylor. Almost every weekend in March through August and several weekends in the fall, the two are traveling throughout the western United States. They estimate they have traveled nearly 20,000 miles this year.
Jordan Taylor is home schooled throughout the year so that he can devote his time to rodeo. He will be entering the eighth grade this fall and will spend one more year competing in the Junior High School Rodeo Association before he moves on to High School Rodeo.
Youth Rodeo as a sport takes a lot of time and effort. The youngsters take care of their own horses and practice for hours for their events.
?I am extremely proud of everything he [Jordan] has done,? said Ron Taylor. ?It?s been a lot of work and I give him credit for lots of practice and it?s finally paid off.?
